Also, I had written a, um, well, rather emotional response to that post on Facebook. I try to keep my mouth shut, but I have to say, when I read these upsetting, inflammatory conservative opinions (there are some rational ones, of course, but mostly the people speaking up are interested drawing direct lines from Obama to Hitler. People. COME. ON. That is so not okay.) -- that poem keeps running through my mind:
"THEY CAME FIRST for the Communists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist.
THEN THEY CAME for the Jews,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew.
THEN THEY CAME for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a trade unionist.
THEN THEY CAME for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
THEN THEY CAME for me
and by that time no one was left to speak up."
I strongly believe that I have to speak up when things are being said or done that I don't feel is right. I know that's what the extremist conservatives are doing, and that's totally fine. We have freedom of speech, even and especially when I don't agree with what's being said. However, I don't want them to be the only voice speaking.
Enter Jon Stewart. Thank you!!!

Nope, you're not alone. It sounds like you've cultivated lots of good friendships and people who want the best for you! Hang in there.
im so sorry this had gotten you down so. im glad you were able to get some kind sentiments from some folks though.
what a lot of people dont understand is that this is literally a matter of life or death for terri and im sorry that you have the burden of informing ignorant people of that.
ive definitely weeded out my facebook page in recent months. i really try to be open minded and just let me people do and say what they will, but when it became literally stressful to log on to Facebook, i knew something had to be done.
I know. I've decided to start counteracting direct assaults with kindness. Someone started in on me. They had a picture of a sheep as their photo. So I just said, "Cute sheep. Have a great day." How can you argue with someone who doesn't want to hear your point? At some point, you can't.
I hear ya. These days, I'm really getting to understand that several people I have friended on facebook... even some that i have known for a long time are a lot like the dude Jon Stewart is making fun of. And I can have the same reaction as Stewart.... like... wha???!!!! I love the Daily Show... it's about as close as I get to watching daily news.
Sometimes he is so funny I can't even believe it.
I can't get the video through the links because of international copyright but I think I know he clip - with the blackboard that just keeps swivelling? (We watched it on Channel 4 over here, which thankfully carries The Daily Show.) Now, I'm not always the biggest Jon Stewart fan even though I usually agree with his opinion, but this was one bit that was RIGHT. As in, correct. I loved it.
