Hopeful

I wonder if I wasn't the only person who found President Obama's speech personally moving and inspiring. Faced with so many unknowns and scary times, his message of pressing on, and being brave and courageous and curious and ever-hopeful, ever-ready to turn the tide... I felt a conviction that all this will turn out okay. In my own life and in America.

I was so proud this morning, standing in the office training room watching the swearing-in, surrounded by my incredibly diverse coworkers, all of us wiping away tears and looking at each other with huge smiles and waves of hope surging through our collective hearts.

So freaking proud! And relieved. And Aretha was amazing! The hat!!

And now, can I just say that I loved Michelle's dress, and I can't wait to see what she wears tonight at the ball. I think Michelle is fabulous. Ain't NOBODY going to cheat on THAT woman and live to tell about it! She's got sass and I like that. I can't wait to see what she does in her role.

Happy, happy day.

I barely held it together listening to his speech at work today. I loved Aretha's hat. Takes panache to pull something like that off. And yes, Michelle's dress, loved it. That woman has style.

Michelle rocks. Everyone at my office was all happy this morning and we were all crying... it was so great. And I LOVE the white dress, tonight!

LOVED the green gloves with the yellow dress. Reading those words together, it does not sound great, but man, what a classy yet distinctive choice.

I was raised in politics (2 of 3 immediate family members directly involved, one an elected official) so it's very, very easy for me to get jaded about politics. That doesn't mean I don't believe in the process - it's just easy for me to be jaded. Inaugerations are lovely, but I'm interested in what happens next. I think it's safe to say, however, that I am cautiously optimistic - a feeling I haven't had in awhile.

The most inspiring moment for me? Gwen Eifel's "man on the street" interviews in DC, when she interviewed a man about my age who eagerly said, "I'm ready to know what I can do, I'm ready for the president to tell us what we can do to make things better." It was very personal, very meaningful, and very inspirational.

(My boyfriend, by the way, has a crush on Gwen Eifel though he won't admit it :)

I try to avoid commenting on American politics because I don't want to sound like I'm one of those Europeans who think they have America all figured out without ever having set foot there, but I have to say: I really like this man. And I'm happy for you :D
