Day 6 of Thanksgiving

Call me silly, but today I am grateful for hot water bottles.

(isn't it cute? Looks like it's tucked into a sleeping bag)

I came home yesterday and found Terri like this: hat, scarf, fleece-lined flannel shirt, sweats, two pairs of wool socks. My little bundled-up babushka, poor thing. She has terrible circulation because of the CFS, plus she is stuck at home all day, so she really suffers.

So, in order to combat the chill, I've been busy preparing for winter, which is silly since we live here and my disdain for our barely-winter is well-documented. Still, it's dang cold inside our house and Terri needs to be warm, so I keep trying.

I spent last weekend sewing: I made some birdseed-filled microwavable neck warmers, and I also made cozies for the hot water bottles. There is nothing like getting into a freshly-made bed which has been warmed by very hot water bottles. Except for the part where they are so hot that they burn you. Hence, the thick fleece cozies. These are amazing. I am completely, head-over-heels in love with these now.

We have those microfleece sheets on the bed, plus warm jammies, plus fleece-wrapped hot water bottles. It's heaven, absolute heaven. They stay warm all night, too. If you have a cold bed, I recommend, without reservation, a hot water bottle (preferably wrapped in jaunty holiday plaid fleece). I only wish I'd had one of these when I was a kid, growing up in another delightful old house with no insulation, only in Oregon where it really WAS cold!

I was thinking just the other day that I need to get me a hot water bottle. I had one that I lost years ago and never got around to replacing. The house I moved into this past April is the same: lovely, but SO chilly.

Love the cute hot water bottle jacket! I thought it was cold at my house! Even though our house is "old" (1950) it is very well insulated and we have a good furnace. We keep the house at 65 during when we are home, 62 when we are gone and 59 at night. We don't dare go lower than that or we risk our pipes freezing when it drops below zero. It's amazing how in spring when it reaches 65 outside I can wear short sleeves and be warm but in winter 65 feels like a freezer. When we get chilly or need to warm our hands James has these hot/cold packs that the drug company sends him for free and we heat a couple in the mircowave and, ahhh, heavenly warmth. maybe Terri could try a little space heater when she gets really cold?

Tammie: I know! i hate to turn on the heat because we have crappy baseboard heaters placed under big windows, but sometimes I think we just have to. It's too cold on some days.

Barefoot: I felt so bad when I saw how bundled up she was!!

Ana: I'm convinced that hot water bottles will save us this winter.

Stef: we have those oil radiator space heaters and that helps. The electric fan ones blow the fuses! Ahh, the joys of living in old apartment buildings...I wanted to get her some of those handwarmer things; maybe today.

Rachel: fleece is the best!

PS to everyone, this morning it was unbearably cold, like camping-cold, so I turned on the heaters. I cringe at the PG&E bill that will come, but oh my god it feels good to be warm.
