As someone who has ...I really enjoyed your review! As someone who has practiced voluntary simplicity for a while now, and I keep moving back and forth on what qualifies as needed vs extra, where does quality come in, and what about pleasure - I found your review of your book very intelligent. I love how you criticize what would bother me too- how can she have a house, an apartment and 3 cars and not buy Q-tips? Doesn't renovation sound like consumerism, unless it's really needed? And I would want to see if it affected their buying or appreciation of the power of advertising, at the end. Excellent review, Daphne! and I am so not buying this book!Susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09095246748581382752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-63734213233981814692009-02-06T20:18:00.000-08:002009-02-06T20:18:00.000-08:00Not having read the book, all I can do is roll my ...Not having read the book, all I can do is roll my eyes at the concept and think, "Uh, I think there are poor women all over the world who can tell you all about not buying unnecessary things and not have to go on and on about how 'librating' or whatever it is."

It's the same reason I've never been interested in the show Survivor - there are indigenous people all over the world who can live close to the land without bursting into tears or tearing each other down.

-LaraAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-65943447678527215722009-02-06T19:43:00.000-08:002009-02-06T19:43:00.000-08:00Tammie: I know! She kept saying that the point was not to save money, and so she just made sure that none of us were going to do that, by not providing any detail of her experience. I found it really annoying.

Ally: It is a shame; it's one of those books that SHOULD have been good, but wasn't.

Alex: I think we're in a rare situation where you liked a book and I don't! I thought that she SIGNIFICANTLY downplayed the getting-out-of-debt angle (that subject merited maybe three or four sentences in the whole book?) and that was not what she was going for anyway (she says). It was a side benefit, but she made a point of saying over and over that that was NOT the point. She was unclear about what the point WAS. I found all the political stuff to be total filler, and really obnoxious. Anyway, glad you resold it! I'll skip "Urban Hermit" since I'm quite annoyed with urban utopianists right now. :)Daphnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15394393707234499156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-46215100094911247072009-02-06T18:34:00.000-08:002009-02-06T18:34:00.000-08:00I didn't think this book was THAT bad, Daph. What ...I didn't think this book was THAT bad, Daph. What I got from it that you can in fact get out of debt over the course of a year if you cut back significantly. Perhaps that wasn't enough for a full book, so she went off on those political rants. She was a little high on the consumer chain to be so self-righteous, but I found the book entertaining overall.

I would agree that it is a "cheat" to have book deal to do this sort of thing. It's the same thing as celebrities who have contracts to lose weight. That isn't real motivation and doesn't translate to the populace.

I did buy this book, actually. Then I resold it.

If you want an annoying and pointless book on this topic, try "The Urban Hermit."Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-84474809382405818402009-02-06T16:21:00.000-08:002009-02-06T16:21:00.000-08:00I have seen this book around a lot (agreed, horren...I have seen this book around a lot (agreed, horrendous cover) and I even looked it up on Goodreads to see what people thought. After reading some of the negative reviews I decided not to read it. It's such an interesting idea. What a shame.Allisonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04047452397679782273noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-50114887000978068462009-02-06T16:10:00.000-08:002009-02-06T16:10:00.000-08:00I cannot tell you how many times in the last year ...I cannot tell you how many times in the last year I've had my hands on this book (or in my Amazon shopping cart) and I've put it back. I've read a few different reviews about it and wanted to love it, but there was always something that just bugs me about it.

As someone who is also trying to buy less, I want this book to speak to me, but everything I read about it tells me that it isn't going to. And I think not buying Q-tips to prove a point is just silly. A box lasts me about 2 years. It isn't a purchase that makes me feel guilty.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
