And sad to say, I walk past three every day on my way to school (small charity shops actually) so I do a lot of looking. I'm heading to Greece in five weeks and have no summer clothes with me...one. Needed a sweater or two to round out what I managed to pack...done. (Laura Ashley no less! And no flowers on that one.) Now I'm on the lookout for a nice creamer and a couple of vases. My weakness? Twee English porcelain. I bought salt & pepper shakers to ease the desire a bit :)Katehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09314153391153507955noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-53568296889013704232010-03-09T13:23:32.153-08:002010-03-09T13:23:32.153-08:00Daphne -- This was a great post. My kids think I'm such a weirdo for thrifting....But I'm in such good company, I tell them.

And I can't wait to see what you come up with for a summertime quilt. You know I LOVE making quilts out of thrifted sheets. It's my thing!

I will stay tuned to see what you come up with. (and what is it with 70s stuff -- I love the blast from the past too).~ The Jolly Bee ~https://www.blogger.com/profile/11757835166759513899noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-30092226749214003772010-03-08T08:16:59.699-08:002010-03-08T08:16:59.699-08:00Wow Daph, you make me, a person who hates shopping...Wow Daph, you make me, a person who hates shopping of any kind except for books, want to go thrifting. I like your summer quilt idea. You must be sure to share a photo when you make it!Stefaniehttp://somanybooksblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-41015415534931692662010-03-06T22:00:34.150-08:002010-03-06T22:00:34.150-08:00Lara: we need to do our fancy-pants Piedmont garag...Lara: we need to do our fancy-pants Piedmont garage-sale trip this year!!Daphnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15394393707234499156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-62025657778863889102010-03-06T21:49:46.476-08:002010-03-06T21:49:46.476-08:00I like thrifting - but I LOVE garage sales. I love reading the Craig's list ads (more enticing that anything Madison Avenue churns out) on Friday night and heading out with a couple of bucks on Saturday and returning with god knows what. It's not just the stuff (though I've gotten some good stuff) its the poking around people's houses and lives - fascinating.

Best Buys: A $250 Thomas Mann necklace for $2.50 and a $400 Swiss Army suitcase for $15. It can take me over 2 hours to go through one sometimes.

Tammie: my last trip to Portland, a former Bay Area friend said that she thought Portland had the best thrifting anywhere. I think that is probably accurate, although Oakland and San Francisco have some pretty great thrifting. People tend to go through their clothes quickly so there's usually plenty of brand-name items if you're willing to look. i will say it again: you are going to LOVE Portland!!!Daphnehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15394393707234499156noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-56542004076404239572010-03-06T16:42:36.529-08:002010-03-06T16:42:36.529-08:00oooh i love this post. i love thrifting so, so muc...oooh i love this post. i love thrifting so, so much.

i totally agree with number 4. when im thrifting, i really look for brands i cant readily afford new in the shops. i cannot believe you come across stuff from Sundance, you lucky gal! never seen anything like that here. i cant wait to hit the thrift shops out west. mostly, people here dont spend a lot of money on their clothes, so 90% of the time the stuff i find is from wal mart or target. not even worth my time.

the best area ive lived in so far for thrifting was the miami/boca raton area and the reason is simple, yet slightly morbid. a lot of the folks living there are very very old and when they die, their younger relatives come down from up north and donate all their stuff to goodwill. really good quality vintage stuff. there are shops i used to spend half a day in and still not see everything.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-28671830.post-60227610582976503712010-03-06T09:07:26.084-08:002010-03-06T09:07:26.084-08:00I love charity shops! How could anyone not love cheap-and-green shopping? ;)

I suspect it works differently over here, because there are lots of very small shops, and you can probably be done in any given shop in around five minutes, unless you're really lucky. I tend to look in the windows as I pass, and pop in if I spot that they have a good amount of stuff in colours I like; it doesn't take long to look at everything the right colour & size. I'll also make a special trip if I'm looking for jeans.

I am very strict with myself about only buying clothes that I really LOVE... but I have to be super-strict whether it's a new or secondhand purchase.Rachel Cotterillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08969719330048416996noreply@blogger.com
